    Partitions

Recent Updates - 12 Jan 2006: Thanks to the critical bug caused by linux-image-2.6.14-5-k7, I had to reinstalled all the Debian System. This page was updated to the date. I used Net installer, debian-31r0a-i386-binary-1-iso. This time, I changed the sizes of the partitions and the order of the procedures of installation. The installation worked fine. The machine is now on linux-image-2.6.15-1-k7.

History: I started to use an HP nx9005 in January 2004. I dual-booted Windows XP home Sp1 and Debian GNU/Linux (kenrel 2.4.28) on the machine. After I had used the nx9005 for about ten months, the CD-RW/DVD stopped working and the LCD started to blink and I got the computer repaired in November 2004. It took six weeks until I got back the machine. The LCD, CPU, CD-RW/DVD and keybord panel were replaced with new ones. The computer which was on Windows XP home sp2 and Debian GNU/Linux (kernel 2.6.11-1) got back to work again from January 2005. I am basically happy with the AMD Athlon XP2200+. The speed of the cpu is fast enough to browse internet, run shoebox and openoffice.org, work on text and html materials in LaTeX environments while using multimedia packages such as kaffeine, xmms, streamtuner, transcriber, m(edia) player, real player and itunes both on the Linux and Windows.

Installing Debian/GNU Linux Sarge 3.1 to the HP nx9005

This section shows how I installed sarge 3.1 (then, upgraded to sid and linux-image-2.6.15-1-k7) to my nx9005 in January 2006.

    # $ boot: linux26 noapic nolapic [ I couldn't boot from the CD installer if I didn't add the options, noapic nolapic. So you may need to do the same thing. Once you successfully boot with the CD, follow the installer's navigation.]

You can see how I partitioned the hdd, click here.

    Basic packages and security< settings/a>

    # apt-get install sudo
    # visudo [non-root user name] ALL=(ALL) ALL

    # apt-get install x-windows-system
    # apt-get install emacs21

    # emacs /etc/ssh/sshd_config # /etc/init.d/ssh restart [restart the ssh server.]

    Also need to do
    this.

    KDE

    # apt-get install kde
    # apt-get install clamav guarddog [Do this after installing x-window-system and kde ]

    Upgrade to Linux-image-2.5.15-1-k7

At this stage, the kernel is 2.6.8-1-386. I upgrade it to 2.5.15-1-k7.
    # cd /etc/apt
    # mv sources.list sources.list.old

Create a new /etc/apt/sources.list like this.

    # apt-get update
    # apt-get upgrade

    Wireless network

    Working on it.......

    Packages

This section is basically for those who use emacs and LaTeX on Kde in Japanese environments on Debian. You need to adjust language locales etc for your languages to use. I don't need file menu and help to be displayed in Japanese as long as Japanese fonts will be displayed when I actually use packagess.

    # apt-get install ncftp ntpdate mozilla-browser mozilla-psm mozilla-firefox mozilla-thunderbird openoffice.org openoffice.org-kde openoffice.org-help-en oooqs-kde kdm digikam camera migemo ruby html-helper-mode w3m w3m-img w3m-el emacs-goodies-el

The Japanese language settings: LaTeX settings: Emacs settings:

    Audio and multimedia

Alsa works fine on the nx9005.

    ACPI

    # apt-get install modconf [If you would like to use modconf to install and uninstall modules.]

    # modconf

    Current Problems

I wanted to use external speakers via usb, but the usb audio mixer doesn't work for this purposes.

Installing Debian/GNU Linux Woody 3.0r2 to the HP nx9005

This section shows how I installed Woody 3.0r2 to my nx9005 in January 2004. I currently use Sarge 3.1 (kernel 2.6.11-1) and don't use kernel 2.4.** anymore. I leave this section for reference purposes.

    Procedures

    1. AMD Ahtlon: use 'kernel-image-2.4.**-k7'. Using kernel-image-2.4.**-696 will make X freeze at the login prompt.
    2. Currently using kernel-image-2.4.27-1-k7.
    3. I tried kernel-image-2.6-k7 and had a boot problem.
    4. Graphic card: need to choose VESA instead of ALI.
    5. Xserver configuration: don't choose 'exmod'. If you do so, X will quit at 'initializing peripherals'. (See Debian GNU/Linux on a Dell Inspiron 8100)
    6. Sound card: choose Trident (ALT 1535+) for kernel 2.4.**.
    7. Mouse: chooose '/dev/psaux', 'ImPS/2' (three buttoms)
    8. Access to Windows partition: add a line '/dev/hda1 /winxp vfat defaults 1 2' to /etc/fstab. (/winxp will show up to access the Windows partition.)
    9. Security: add the lines 'ALL : ALL' and 'ALL : 127.0.0.1' to the files /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow respectively. The number 127.0.0.1 enables me to access the server.)
Also see here to set up the woody on the nx9005.

Notes: I felt 10.0 GB for /usr in the previous partition is too big. I also felt 500 MB is enough for /var. I also reduced the size of / and /home as shown in the current partitions. Because of this, the size of the /E become 12.5 GB in which I store my data.
